Hi my name is Kieran and I am this year’s Trainee with the Active Neighbourhoods project. I am writing this blog to share my experiences. It is for anyone interested in conservation or community engagement, or wanting to know what it is like to start out on the career conservation career ladder. I will be posting about my experiences over the next year.

About Active Neighbourhoods (AN) is a 3 year (2016-2019) partnership project between Plymouth City Council and Devon Wildlife Trust, funded by Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities.  It aims to improve 5 green spaces in Plymouth’s more deprived communities to create ‘nature hubs’ through delivering a range of activities that engage local residents and promote active citizenship, support improved health and well being, and improve and safeguard these vital local assets for the future.

More about traineeships on the project….

The AN project has a 12 month full-time Conservation and Community Engagement traineeship each year and I’m the first one, working alongside the Community Outreach Officer and Urban Ranger.

The traineeship is aimed at people looking for a career in nature conservation and provide the skills and experience that are essential for future employment within this highly competitive sector. No formal educational qualification or training is required but applicants must be able to demonstrate their potential and desire to learn new skills, work as part of a team and the personal commitment to complete a 12 month training programme.

This is not a salaried position, but trainees receive a bursary of £750 per month, with a further completion payment also payable. Note that this is a 12 month training opportunity only and there is no salaried position offered on completion of the programme. Accommodation is not offered for this post. The trainee will be expected to make their own arrangements for accommodation during the training programme.

If you are interested in getting into conservation why not take up a traineeship with AN?  Another place will be open when I finish in December this year.  More info here:  http://www.devonwildlifetrust.org/jobs/active-neighbourhoods-traineeship

Cheers!
